“Musculoskeletal ultrasound scanning has proved to be an extremely useful modality in my sports medicine practice in terms of enhancing clinical examination and aiding diagnosis of soft tissue injuries, in particular, muscle, tendon and ligament injuries. The ability to assess structural tissue changes and dynamic function with ultrasound scanning is helpful when monitoring recovery and planning progressions during rehabilitation. The addition of a colour/power doppler facility is, in my view, essential for evaluating areas of tendinopathy and joint synovitis. The advent of portable scanners that produce high quality images has meant that clinicians involved in sports and musculoskeletal medicine can develop scanning skills that enhance their practice when dealing with athletes and patients in their club or clinic setting (subject to formal training and support from radiologist colleagues).”
