Ultrasound scannerUltrasound scanning has revolutionised the way practitioners work. Dynamic real time scanning is a great visual tool that enhances client assessments and
treatment protocols.

Ultrasound scanning is at the vanguard of:

  • Biofeedback and core stability

  • Assessments of tendons and muscles

  • Measuring and analysing injuries in detail

  • Assessing muscle movement

  • Monitoring patients’ progress throughout treatment regimes

Using ultrasound scanning has transformed the way some physiotherapists work:

“Taking delivery of the Epidot SC scanner from Mobilis, and becoming registered with the dynamic ultrasound group has enabled us to offer a service to our patients, which helps guide our treatment, reassure the patient and give real time benchmarks and physiological outcome measures throughout the course of their injury.

Through using the scanner we have been able to clearly distinguish the position and size of intra-muscular haematomas, guiding our treatment to a specific portion of a specific muscle. Using the volume and area functions of the unit allows us to gain an accurate indication of how the injury is responding to treatment as we re-scan at intervals in time. The scanner also enables us to look at more chronic injuries, clearly showing inflammation within tendon sheaths, or disruption of the periostium, confirming periostitits. This has been most beneficial when dealing with both everyday tendonitis injuries as well as higher level sportsman including semi-professional footballers and veteran international athletes. Using the scanner with these types of patients, in conjunction with a full physiotherapy assessment, enables the correct management of sport specific injuries, maintaining best possible performance. This is also true for the general public where evaluation of the tissues condition, and the area of disruption, gives an understanding of the biomechanics causing the underlying condition, resulting in the correct prescription of orthotics or a stretching programme for example.

Patient response to the facility has been extremely positive, many recommending friends or family to come and receive an assessment including the scanner. This has lead to the catchments of patients that may otherwise not have come to see a physiotherapist for their injury, believing it would resolve on its own. Further to this the patients have shown a great interest in the scanner as a biofeedback tool, not only in assessing the resolution of an injury, but also in demonstrating the activiation of transverse abdominous and multifidus muscles in the treatment of lower back pain.”

“I have found the Mobilis Epidot S ultrasound scanner invaluable in the rehabilitation of patients with pelvic floor dysfunction and continence problems.

It provides positive biofeedback in teaching pelvic floor exercises in the location of their pelvic floor muscles and performing the correct movement. It can also help reduce the number of vaginal examinations required as progress can be checked less invasively. The level of support provided in the training and use of the scanner, both for physiotherapists and nurses has been excellent. The portability of the machine is an additional benefit to professionals like me who work in various community settings.”
